Starting Pre-School

The first days

The first days

A child who is tense or unhappy will not be able to play or learn properly, so it is important for parents and Pre-School staff together to help the child to feel confident and secure in the group. This takes longer for some children than for others and parents should not feel worried if their child takes a while to settle. We are proud of our staff/child ratio and can therefore assist each parent in the transitional phase.

On your child’s first day we will help them to create their own “busy bag ”, with their name on.This is used every day to carry items to and from the Pre-School sessions. Coming home in the busy box will be the children’s work and Pre-School newsletters etc, so please check the contents after each session.

Items you will need to provide for the “busy bag ” are:

  • Wellington boots for our nature walks in the surrounding field and playing in the garden

  • Sun hat – please note that staff are not permitted to apply suncream to your child, so please ensure that you as parent/carer do this before they come to school

  • Overalls for painting

  • Change of clothes

  • Coat, hat and gloves in colder weather

Please clearly name all your children’s items.

Please do not bring toys (comforters excepted) to the school. No toy guns or games involving guns or violence are allowed.

Children are encouraged to share and care for toys and equipment. Sometimes odd pieces of a puzzle or toys may end up in a “busy bag ”. Please don’t be embarrassed by this, but do return the item as soon as possible.
